Newsletter – October-January 2016/17
East Bradford Cycling Club and Kids’ Saturday Bike Club issue 46 October 2016
Welcome to Autumn and Winter 2016/2017 – Recent updates are in this Green colour!
Happy New Year!
Well another year has gone by, with KSBC as popular as ever. EBCC is branching out, getting involved with more coaching and event organising. This means that more help in all areas would be welcome, some roles mean you don’t have to ride, don’t have to be a parent, there are lots of opportunities to get involved, fancy finding out more? Please ask, Helen or Mandy or Matt or Amelia for more details/
Hope you’ve all had a good summer, it’s a while since the last full newsletter in April!
This newsletter will be updates on past events and details of events to come. If I’ve missed anything, sorry!
The club has so much going on through the year it’s sometimes hard to keep track of it all!
Great news about the UCI World Road Champs coming to Yorkshire in 2019! I’m sure there will be even more cycling opportunities and events based around that.
So this is a little background to EBCC and KSBC – EBCC is not just KSBC – it’s not just a place for kids to ride their bikes (although that’s brilliant to see them all) there’s a lot of history and dedication from coaches and other volunteers both on a Saturday morning and at other events throughout the year, up front and behind the scenes. We are ALL volunteers, no one gets paid a penny.
EAST BRADFORD CC – the club was formed in 1899 – yes 118 years ago! Ladies were admitted in 1907. Back then there were hundreds of cycling clubs, hence East Bradford Cycling Club, (as opposed to West, North or South), formed at a meeting at the Northern Hotel in Laisterdyke. The club thrived on club runs, racing, touring and time trialling.
In 1998 two members, Jim Littlefair and Mike Healey, decided to start an activity session for youngsters at Richard Dunn Sports Centre. Both Jim and Mike were great at time trials and races “back in the day”, we forget this sometimes, some may not even know of this fact! This became Kids Saturday Bike Club (KSBC) and has gone from strength to strength from those early beginnings (that’s a whole new story) to what it is today, 18 years later with Mike still at the helm. 1000s of kids have come along over the years and cycled with KSBC, some have gone on to compete at National level, one represented Great Britain in Rio, earlier this year!
We hope that everyone who comes along to any event, organised by or representing EBCC, enjoys themselves!

WHAT’S ON in near future? (EBCC organised or EBCC welcome)Club Nights of ebcc
We are not meeting at Hepworth and Idle CC any more as it’s unsuitable for roller use and the renting situation has changed. Who can believe we’ve been meeting there for 13 years – first in the tiny pavilion, then the cold shell of the new clubhouse and gradually into better accommodation as the clubhouse improved. So as we continue to roam around the area we have Farsley Farfield Primary School as our new clubhouse “home” for now. In Leeds but quite handy for EBCC!
Meetings have and will take place here (during roller season) after Thursday night rollers. Dates are 27 October, 24 November, Pie and Peas Social 8 December, AGM 25 January (tbc) 23 February and 30 March.

Help is always welcome on a Saturday morning, I know it’s hard when everyone else seems to know what they’re doing and where equipment goes but if you’d like to help out (every little helps) please ask Amelia, who is our volunteer coordinator, what you can do to help. Perhaps shadow someone so when they are away you can help? Thanks to those who have volunteered already.
We welcome Pat O’Kane as a new coach, if anyone else would like to get involved, please ask Amelia. Amelia and Dave Stevens are going on a coaching course in February, which is great news as new coaches are most welcome! this means that new volunteers will be needed for signing on/handing out bibs. Also if the coffee/snack bar is to continue, a volunteer rota will need to be implemented, if lots get involved then “your turn” will be once every 6 weeks or so!
Please ask Amelia in next few weeks about getting involved. Thanks.
Thank you to Joanne Ward for her volunteer coaching at KSBC over the past 10 years, she has now stepped down from that role but for now is continuing with membership secretary duties for EBCC.
